BS 4142:2014 Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound

Assessing industrial and commercial sound in their setting can be an important part of the planning process. The industrial and commercial sound is measured externally and isolated from the total sound environment so its level relative to the background can be considered.

The sound is also rated for annoying tonal characteristics or impulses. It can be used to assess new, modified or additional sources of sound or for assessing the sound where there is proposed new residential dwellings or premises.

These levels can inform the necessary mitigation of unwanted sound and noise to gain planning consent. Whilst it can be used to investigate complaints it is not used to determine Noise Nuisance which is better handled by Environmental Health officers at your local council.
